You Tube meeting

On Monday the eCadets, Miss Williams, Mrs Thomas and our new eParent Rod Harding all got together and discussed using YouTube during lessons. We had a balanced debate and came up with pros and cons. After a lot of discussion we decided to trial having YouTube unblocked for a couple of months but only for KS2; then we will get to together to see if we should keep YouTube unblocked. We plan to change our pupil acceptable use policies and teach children about safe searching on YouTube.  Access to YouTube will only be available during lesson times to help with work.

eCadet Cyberbullying assembly

We did an assembly about cyberbullying earlier this week. We wanted to teach the  other children how to prevent and deal with cyberbullying. We began the assembly by making a cyberbullying presentation using Google Slides. Next we facetimed Broughton Primary School to hear their eSafety poem. Then we showed everybody a You Tube video from Newsround called Caught in the web. Finally we asked if there was any questions and shared our new cyberbullying page/poster with every class.

eParent

Rod Harding is our new eParent at Cornist Park, we are delighted to welcome Mr Harding to our eSafety team. Miss Williams and the eCadets are delighted and enthusiastic to start working with him. The reason we chose him was because he has ideas of how to keep children safe online and he is a very supportive parent. We believe that he will be very good at helping those who need it and work with the e Cadet team with challenges.

Teaching eSafety to KS2

This week we taught KS2 all about personal profiles, everybody was a pleasure to teach. All the children understood well about the limited information you can put on a personal profile. Some children needed some help and guidance to fully understand the objective of lesson. Even one of the support staff said they were going to change one of their personal profiles!

We used the template given as a resource for the activity, as an extension task we used A3 paper to make a mindmap of the good and bad things to put on a profile. We  also did a quiz at the end of the lesson to make sure they had fully understood the lesson. Some of the other eCadets decided to ask their classes to make their own personal profiles using Pic Collage on the iPads.

Lots of pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 understood what an avatar is. Most of the Year 4 helped the year 3 if they got confused. We think that the children really listened to us teaching the lesson, we plan on doing a bubble time next week so that children can come and see us if they have any problems.

Introducing our new eCadet team

We had many applicants to be eCadets  but seven of them stood out. So we moved them on to the interviews. Miss Williams and our eSafety Governor, Phil Brownbill helped us to run the interviews. The interviews were the hardest we've ever had because every single one of them were AMAZING! The decision was so difficult, we had to ask Miss Thomas for help! In the end we choose five eCadets to join our team.

Instagram

We have realised that most children in KS2 are now using Instagram so we decided to make a video to help our friends stay safe whilst using Instagram.

For parents that want to know more we have found a Parents Guide to Instagram.

eSafety in the community

Today we went to Barclays Bank to promote eSafety and warn people about phishing. Phishing is when people send emails trying to get your personal information such as your bank details. We handed out leaflets which included information about phishing and hacking. We talked to lots of customers including a man from the Flintshire County Council. We gave him a leaflet which he said he would put up in his office. A photographer came to take photos of us for the Flintshire Leader newspaper too. I hope we helped people to understand the importance of staying safe online.

Blue Peter Badges

Before Christmas we applied for Blue Peter badges and we wrote a email to tell them what we do and what we have done in the past. They were very interested in what we do and decided to send us Blue Peter badges!! But they only sent three and there are four of us, but because we are a team we waited until the 4th one came. The 4th one came in January. We now have our badges and we LOVE them!!!
