During the next two weeks, we will be starting our chick hatching programme and going on our trip to Church Farm, Thurstaston.
In Language, Literacy and Communication, we will be writing a class diary about the chicks and reading about the life cycle of a hen. We will also imagine and role play being inside an egg.
In Mathematical Development, we will be recording how many hatch, placing the chicks in various places in, out and around the brooder box then describing their positions. We will be weighing and measuring the chicks too.
In Knowledge and Understanding of the World, we will be learning about the life cycle of a hen and comparing ourselves to chicks, talking about similarities and differences. The children will be using magnifying glasses to look at the chicks then recoding how they look and then the changes taking place each day.
In Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Development, we will be learning how to care for the chicks, writing a set of rules to care for them then sharing our feelings about looking after chicks and caring for living things.
In Creative Development, we will be singing songs and rhymes about the chicks and making up a chicken dance. The children will be doing observational drawing of the chicks and making chicks out of modelling materials. We will be making our own brooder boxes out of old shoe boxes and filling them with pompon chicks to add and subtract with. The children will also make a display about our visit to Church Farm and use Welsh labels for it.
In Welsh Language Development, we will discuss our visit to Church Farm and talk about the different animals we saw, saying the Welsh words for them. We will sing 'Buwch ydw I' and change the animal name for each subsequent verse. The children will make sets of animals then count how many and match to the correct numeral (working with 'Sawl un?').
In Physical Development, we will develop a dance drama to show hatching experience, pipping, cracking, falling out of shell, tentative steps, becoming more confident. We will also be practising our races for Sports day!
In RE, the children will be developing their understanding and responsibility for living things by talking about the importance of caring for and being kind to all animals.
