Reading Power - The queens knickers

Powerful readers are able to visualise the text whilst they are reading. When we read a certain story, certain words help to create images in our mind. These images are what readers use to help them understand the text better. Visualising is not difficult to do. All children have the ability to close their eyes and imagine or make a picture in their head. Teaching children to visualise may well start with making mind pictures but then they will begin to use all their senses like feelings, sounds, smells and tastes to create images whilst they read.

This week year two have been reading Queens Knickers By Nicholas Allan. The children were asked to visualise a special pair of knickers that the Queen may wear for a certain occasion. The children were asked to describe what the knickers looked like, then they brought their visualisations to life and designed her special knickers.
